Preorder SORCERER TO THE CROWN in paperback & win Coryographies earrings!

I keep meaning to post about things that have happened … but then more things happen and I forget to do it. But never mind my dilatory blogging. Look, it’s a

~*~*~*~SORCERER TO THE CROWN PAPERBACK PREORDER GIVEAWAY!~*~*~*~

sorcerer_front mech.indd Sorcerer to the Crown UK PB

Sorcerer to the Crown is out in paperback on 12 July in the US and 28 July in the UK. (In other countries you should get the respective editions more or less on the same dates, but check with your friendly local bookshop to be sure.) If you preorder and let me know, you’ll get a chance to win these amazing earrings:

Image of earrings made of tiny stacks of books

Tiny awesome book earrings by Coryographies! They retail for £15!

Aren’t they cute? I love my Coryographies Regency bookshelf necklace, which I ordered when Sorcerer first came out in hardcover:

IMG_2685

Look at the tiny quill! The tiny letters! The tiny perfume bottle!

It’s pretty sturdy, but you can tell you shouldn’t be banging it about. And I sort of do, because I take it along whenever I travel for cons or book events and also I’m a terminal fidgeter. Finally the letters on the top shelf fell off in protest1 and I sent the pendant back to Coryographies for repairs — and she sent me the earrings as a gift when she returned it!

Tragically, I can’t wear earrings. But perhaps you can, or know someone who can and would love these! If you tick either of those boxes, plus you love Regency hijinks in conveniently portable paperback form, this is the perfect giveaway for you.

Here’s the deal:

  • You preorder the Sorcerer to the Crown paperback and email me, providing valid proof of purchase, your name and address. (Make sure you email me at the address at the link!)
  • I put your name in a hat.
  • I choose someone at random out of that hat and they win the earrings! It might be you. And then you will look like this!
Picture of me holding an earring up to my ear

Except you will not have to hold the earrings up to your ear because hopefully you will have pierced ears that will hold up the earrings themselves.

1 Just to be clear, if you’re reasonably careful with your possessions you should have no problems. I am pretty rough and even then the letters were only coming away a bit — I pulled them off the rest of the way because I didn’t want them to get detached while I wasn’t looking and be lost forever.

CYBERPUNK: MALAYSIA launch and giveaway

CYBERPUNK: MALAYSIA is out in the world! I’m really excited about this anthology and hope people will enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed putting it together.

Here’s the Table of Contents:

The cover of the book was also revealed for the first time at the launch. In a first for a Fixi book (er, apart from mine), the paperback and ebook have different covers, though the content is the same.

Cyberpunk Malaysia paperback

The paperback

Cyberpunk Malaysia ebook cover

The ebook

Cool, right? Here’s what the publisher says about the covers:

The print cover is simply a mirror. Why? Because our cyber experience is increasingly customised — at its simplest level, the ads and promoted posts you see are based on your own browsing history. So when you look directly at the cover, you will see your face leh.

The ebook cover is “Cyberpunk Malaysia” spelt out several times in binary.

The contents are exactly the same.

And here’s the blurb on the back of the book:

Cyberpunk as you’ve never seen it before…

Science fiction is all about outrageous ideas. Nice Malay girls breaking the rules. Censorship. Brain drain. Moral policing. Migrant exploitation. All the stuff of fiction, obviously.

But these 14 short stories take it one step further. The nice Malay girls are cyborgs. The spambots are people. The brains have drained into cyberspace, and the censorship is inside your head.

Welcome to CYBERPUNK: MALAYSIA.

You can buy the ebook now for US$3.90 on Google Play and Smashwords (other vendors to follow). If you prefer dead tree books, you can buy the print version from Fixi if you’re in Malaysia, or pre-order from Amazon.com if you’re outside Malaysia. And/or you can enter a couple of giveaways for a chance to win the print version!

I’m giving away 1 copy via Rafflecopter — you can sign up RIGHT HERE (no geographical limitations):

A couple of belated updates: interview and book giveaway

Interview

Bristol Festival of Literature organiser Peter Sutton posted an interview with me on his blog:

Interview at Bristol Book Blog

I talk about writing, and my plans for conventions and festivals this year, and the fact that I secretly want to be a sort of Power Ranger giant robot combo of Edith Nesbit and Pankaj Mishra. Which is something I had not known until I did the interview, but is now my life mission!

Book giveaway

Anna Tan edited the Fixi Novo short story anthology Love in Penang which I’m in, and she is running a Love in Penang giveaway! I will put the giveaway code at the bottom of this post so you can enter it from here if you would like. She is giving the book away to one person based in Malaysia and one person based elsewhere.

I wrote a bit about my story in my post about the anthology here, but it’s basically a romcom about mistaken assumptions and misunderstandings. As all romcoms are, I guess! There is a happy ending, of course.

Here is the blurb for the book (it’s in English, in case you were wondering):

Penang, with its mix of old world charm and modern bustle, has captured the hearts of many – making it the ideal place for a little bit of romance. Bask in the sweetness of young hearts falling in love and cheer them on when circumstances stand in their way. Walk through the pain of broken relationships and rejoice at unexpected reunions. Whether you prefer it happy or bittersweet, straightforward or a little complicated, LOVE IN PENANG offers you 18 morsels of love in various forms.

Awesome female characters card, and a challenge

Comments on this post are now closed.

I am skipping today’s Blogging on Demand prompt (sorry, Tade!), but here is an alternative post!

I was in a gift shop today when I noticed this card and got wildly excited:

A moomintroll plushie with female characters card

Moomintroll also approves.

I bought it, took it home to Cephas, and announced: “Look! It’s everyone everyone on my Internet likes!”

So here’s the challenge: leave a comment on this post naming as many of the characters on the card as you can without looking anything up. (Comment on my website, please — easier for me to keep track.)

I will pick one commenter and post the card to them. My decision is completely within my discretion — if there are several commenters who do well, I might end up putting all the names in a hat and picking one out at random.

Of course, this is a bit of an honour system because I’ll have no way of knowing whether you have used Google, or peeked at the other comments, or whatever. But I trust you! (If you’re not the first commenter you’ll have to page down hastily in order to avoid getting hints, come to think of it. Oh well, never mind!)

Card showing 16 female characters

Close-up of the card

Open to all countries — you just have to be willing to give me your postal address if you win. I will close this post to new entries when there seem to have been enough comments.
